Are you a resolution-maker? I’m one of the many that has high hopes during these first few weeks of the year. I dream huge dreams and optimistically imagine the ways my life will transform in the next 12 months. While I am a big advocate of dreaming and planning, I’m also learning to be a bit more realistic. This year I’m doing a combination of traditional resolutions and quarterly benchmarks. I’ll get to the benchmarks later on in another blog post but for today, here are 3 of my resolutions for my art this year:
Each first Friday (including today!) I will do a shop update. Each month will have a different theme and a new collection or update to share on the website. Today is the first of these “First Fridays” and you can see the updated collection of goat towels. I’ve been feeling very colorful lately so I printed my beloved goats in all different colors. Want to be the first to hear about the update and get a sneak peek? Join my email list! You will get about 1 email a month from me.
The second resolution is a really hard one for me but I think it will make a BIG difference for my art business. I plan to prep and assemble all my class materials 2 weeks before the start of the class. I have 3 classes running concurrently and I don’t want the added stress of scrambling for materials each week. However, my brain thinks in colors and pictures and loose ideas (artist, ay know?) so this will be a real challenge for me. I’ve set my first deadline to have all materials prepped by January 9 (6 days!?).
The last resolution is one I’m excited about and disappointed to set too. I’m taking an Instagram sabbath each week. To start out I will take Saturdays off. No posting, no scrolling, no checking in, nada. It’s exciting because I’ve done similar limits before and I LOVE the freedom of no comparison and no need to create “gram worthy” content. At the same time, my insecurity tells me that the algorithm will leave me behind and I will fade into the distance by taking time off. I think my inner voice says this about a lot of things, but social media is an easy place to start to tame the beast. And sabbath is a gift, right?
These are my 3 primary goals for art this year. I have 5-6 that are very boring and business-y (like when to update budgets, etc) and a separate list for my personal life. I can share my personal another time if you are interested. The key for me is 2 things: goals I feel strongly about and baby steps to get there. Although I’m nervous about the challenges, I’m also excited to see the growth for myself and my art this year. Do you have any new plans for 2020?
