Maybe you know I love goats.
It’s a strange thing to fall in love with farming and rural life when you grow up in the suburbs and city. But I did! And this part of the story starts 5 years ago with a few chickens and a house on and urban lot. When Kevin and I were living in Portland, we had a few backyard chickens and I took over most of the front yard to create a garden. Things were tight but I loved my tiny 1/10 acre lot homestead.
And then I started reading more about homesteading and I fell in love with goats. I went to visit some area petting zoos and farms but it wasn’t the same. I wanted the whole experience. Some neighbors had a few goats in their front yard so it got me thinking... I looked around our very full yard and decided on the driveway. We didn’t use the garage and it was almost fully shaded so I couldn’t grow vegetables there. It seemed like a perfect solution. I began to not so subtly suggest that we should make the front gravel a goat run. Kevin was not a fan of this plan.
On the bright side, he could see how much this farming dream meant to me. And over the months (and for a number of other reasons) we slowly decided to look for a farm and sell our first home.
Fast forward 2 years we had sold our house and been priced out of more than one location. We found a home and land outside of Richmond and I finally got my farm. Now fast forward 3 more years and I finally have my Nubian goats!! They are darling. Sweet faces and long swinging ears and fun markings. I can’t wait to see their personalities as they settle in to life on our farm. Now to brainstorm new names for these two!
