Hi! I’m glad you’re here. My name is Rebecca and I’m the artist, homesteader, mom and wife around here. Thanks for visiting!

Knitting Up My Love

It started with a pair of socks and a very cautious kid.

I love to knit. And my skills are at a place where I can make clothes for myself and others. A few years ago, I started making “love socks” for my son and daughter. I told them that they would feel my love like a hug for their feet whenever they wore the socks. Both LOVED these little reminders of my love.

As I’ve become a more confident and faster knitter, I’ve added “love sweaters” to the mix. My son has always loved the idea and now my daughter will pack her “love sweater” along with her “just in case” she needs to feel my love.

And now it’s my turn. I have all kinds of scraps from many projects over the years. None were really big enough for anything but I didn’t want to part with them. Each scrap was attached to a memory. I’m not a sentimental really, but these were still practical and sentimental so the little yarn balls lived in a box. A few weeks ago, I started a scrappy sweater. I’m using all the bits and balls left over from years of projects. It’s a ridiculously colorful sweater and it will probably look a little foolish.

All the same, I get to wear my very own love sweater, full of memories of projects I’ve made for people I love. So I guess the ridiculousness of it all is a part of the appeal. There’s yarn from the blanket I made for Owen the first year he was here. And there’s yarn from the hat Kate wore home from the hospital. And from the first pair of love socks for him and for her. And much more. It’s a mixed memory tapestry and I love it.
